An electronic cigarette is an device which stimulates feelings similar to those of tobacco.It produces vapors that are similar sensation and physical sensation with tobacco smoke.  An aerosol mist is produced when a solution, propylene glycol, is vaporized.

An e-cig is designed to deliver the exact experience of tobacco smoke without the adverse effects of tobacco smoke. The e-cig is usually in different flavors according to the company producing them and the targetmarket. Some have normal nicotine concentration as normal tobacco cigarettes. Others have reduced concentrations of nicotine while the rest are nicotine-free. This makes a wide range of choices for the users.

The electronic cigarette is usually composed of a liquid reservoir, a heating element and a source of power. The liquid reservoir contains propylene glycol. The power source is usually a battery or a USB cable and adapter.

Most e-cigs are portable. Their cylindrical liquid reservoir is small in size thus making them easily portable. Most of these cigs are reusable hence the liquid solution can be replaced or refilled when it runs out. Other makes of the cigar are disposed after a single use. Their liquid reservoirs are not accessible and thus the solution cannot be refilled.

The idea of electronic cigarette was brought up by Herbert A. Gill in 1963. The e-cig was not implemented until 2003. Hon Lik, a Chinese Pharmacist and a smoker too, designed the e-cig after his father died of the effects of tobacco smoke.

The benefits and effects of the e-cig have not been duly established due to disagreements and differences between reports tabled by the various producers and researchers.

After the invention of the e-cig by Hon, the company he worked for changed its line of production entirely to producing the e-cig. It began exporting to other countries in 2005.

The electronic cigarette is usually designed with a cartridge mouthpiece that resembles the traditional cigarette. In some cases, the cartridge also serves as a small reservoir for the liquid propylene glycol. In other e-cigs, the cartridge and the atomizer/ heating element are a single jointed piece. The cigarettes that have the jointed cartridge and the atomizer (cartomizer) are usually disposable.

The principal part of the e-cig is the electronic circuitry and the power source. A big number of portable e-cigs use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. This makes smoking easier even in most prohibited areas because they do not produce smoke. The wired units usually get their power through USB connections.

The liquids used in the e-cigs can be accessed in disposal cartridges or in separate bottles for refilling reusable cartridges. The separate bottled liquid is usually sold under different brand names depending on the company, the flavors and the nicotine concentration.

The flavors contained in the solutions are of a wide variety too. Some are set to imitate traditional tobacco cigarette brands while others imitate food brands.

Invention of the electronic cigarette was a step to reduction of the effects of tobacco smoking on humanity as well as the environment.
